Sumon Suffocates Field

Another of the Shooters ‘one off’ events was held this past weekend (May 6 & 7th) at the Shooters Snooker and Sports Club in North York. These ‘one off’ events continue to be very popular among amateur players with new dates constantly added. This past weekend saw a “9 and Under 9 Ball Event” take place drawing a field of 60 players from the 64 who had registered for this event.
A continuing sign of what appears to be a renewed interest in pool in Southern Ontario is the strong attendance of new players and the re-emergence of previously strong players who had parked their cues in the closet for several years. It’s also worth mentioning that this 9 ball event follows on the heels of the Silver Jubilee Finale and the Amateur Tour Finale the previous two weekends both of which boasted strong attendance and large purses with significant money added. The appetite for competitive pool tournaments appears to be very strong in the GTA. With the right promotion and a little bit of effort, these types of events can be popular in rooms across the GTA.
Most of the credit for the high participation in these events goes to Shooters room owner Peter Chin for his active recruitment of players and very persistent follow-up. The handicapping system --- though it has its flaws and critics --- must also be viewed as fair by players in order to continue to attract large fields from the hundreds of different players who compete in these events.
With almost $4,000 in prize money available and another $5,000 in the player Calcutta, it was no surprise that this final event drew a very strong field… perhaps the strongest amateur tournament field this year.
With 60 players, Saturday was a long day for many players. ‘B’ side play was a grind reflecting the need to trim the field to the 8 ‘B’ side survivors who would return for Sunday play. From the ‘A’ side of the draw, Adam Monture, Daniel Devos, Marc Julien and Sumon Sarkar emerged undefeated on Saturday for the right to play Sunday. The mind numbing and physically demanding one loss ‘B’ side spawned Darwin Madriaja, Vince Belanger, Al Smart, Paul Sullivan, Louis Fazekas, Stefane Godinho, and John Andrade who were able to qualify for Sunday play.
Sunday as always is a long day with the intensity of the matches to get to a winner. In the ‘A’ side final, Sumon Sarkar defeated Daniel Devos in a quick match sending Devos to the ‘B’ side and Sarkar to the hot seat. Waiting on the ‘B’ side was Marc Julien who had defeated Al Smart for the right to play Devos. Julien was too much for Devos on this day and won the ‘B’ Side final setting up a rematch with Sarkar who had previously defeated him in the ‘A’ side semis. Revenge was not on the menu this day as Sarkar handily defeated Julien to claim the tournament title.

Congratulations to Sumon Sarkar on his hard fought tournament win. Sumon was undefeated in the tournament and continues to make giant leaps in his relatively short pool career. Sumon was never seriously challenged in this event and defeated some very strong players on his way to the tournament win. A big shout-out also goes to Marc Julien, Daniel Devos and Al Smart for their strong play over the weekend.
