Mike Davis and Vic Conte win Al Conte Memorial
Nov 13, 2011
With Dennis Hatch giving the rest of the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour a break, the tour has had a different winner at each event so far this season. The Al Conte Memorial event at Hippo's House of Billiards in Yorkville, NY on November 5-6 was no different, as Mike Davis cruised through the field undefeated for the win at his first event this season.
Davis took the hot seat with a 9-4 win over Dave Grau, and then things got worse for Grau as he dropped a 9-7 match to Shane Winters on the one loss side. Winters had lost to Grau in the final four on the winners side Sunday, but made his way to the finals the long way. It was still for naught as Davis won the first set of the double elimination finals 9-6. Davis pocketed $1100 for the win, with Winters taking home $800 for second.
The second chance event on Sunday had a couple great story lines going for it. First off was the free entry to both the main event and the second chance event, courtesy of an anonymous donor. That entry went to Quentin Keesler, who did not cash in the main event, but took second in the second chance event.
The winner of the second chance event, was Vic Conte, grandson of Al Conte; the namesake of the event. Conte went undefeated and earned $300 for the win.
Tour director Mike Zuglan commented that the Turning Stone Classic XVIII is looking to be a great event and is filling up fast. Players are urged to contact Mike quickly or end up on the waiting list.
