Marius: Shooters’ 9-Ball Super Seven!

Apr 28, 2016

One month after the previous 7 and Under tournament, on April 23, Shooters Snooker Club in Toronto hosted its fourth 7 and Under 9-Ball Straight Race Event. This tournament always seems to put the strongest players SL 7 and under in the spotlight. Because there was a “2-3” and “4-5” Group Shootout 9-Ball tournament scheduled for the following day, the organizers set this as a one-day event. With a strong field of 40 players for this one-day event, it was set to be full of excitement and competition. The pool sharks came out to compete for their share of a combined prize pool and Calcutta just over $3,300.
After a few big upsets in the early rounds, the field was narrowed down to 4 undefeated A-Side players and 2 on the B-Side.
A-Side:
Johnathan Saukney vs Brad Guthrie
Marius Nakas vs Brandon Jaipaul
B-Side:
Steve Menezes and Ken Stutz, who lost his very first match of the tournament.
Brandon beat Johnathan 7-5, sending him to the B-Side to face Ken Stutz. Marius also beat Brad in a close 7-6 match, sending him to the B-Side to face Steve Menezes. On the B-Side, Ken Stutz would be eliminated by Johnathan 7-6 and Steve would also eliminate Brad 7-3. Steve and Johnathan would then play each other in the B-Side semifinals. Steve got the best of Johnathan, winning that match 7-5. Steve anxiously awaited his next challenge, the loser of the hot-seat match on the A-Side.
Back over on the A-Side, Brandon and Marius would try to end each other’s undefeated run. Marius’ shooting proved to be too good for Brandon, as he defeated Brandon 7-4 and earned his spot in the A-Side finals. Brandon and Steve would face off for one last chance in the finals. In this heated match, Brandon was the winner in a tough hill-hill 7-6 match.
The final match was set as a rematch between Brandon and Marius. Because of the true double elimination format, Marius would have to lose two sets in order for Brandon to take down the tournament. Brandon won the first set 7-3, but unfortunately for him, Marius regained his form, winning the decisive set 7-3. Congratulations Marius Nakas for winning this long one-day event. Thank you to all the players and those who came out to support.

Shooters would like to remind everyone that 404 Tour Finale will be next week April 30/May 1 with 15% held back from the 8 tour events and extra money added!!
Shooters would also like to let everyone know that this Sunday, there will be a 9-Ball Scotch Doubles one-day event. Maximum handicap is 8, with a maximum individual handicap of 5.
