Lucasi Summer Shootout Finale

Oct 14, 2011

This summer Big Wigs along with the generosity of Lucasi Hybrid Cues, hosted a series of amateur 8-ball tournaments for men and women. We held 4 qualifying events, of which players were required to participate in only one event t qualify for the grand finale. As a result of Lucasi’s donation, we were able to host a $700 added championship on October 8th.
The tournament format is a modified round robin with no handicap. The players play 5 rounds of 4 games in each match. 15 men and 3 women arrived poised and ready to do battle. Due to the small turnout of women, we decided to divide the players into 3 groups with the top 2 scores advancing to the single knock-out playoffs.
After all the tie breakers were finished, the final 6 were Paul Robinson, Denis Brazeau, Bobby Drowns, Scott Noonan, Kevin Hurd and Loreen Toutant. Paul and Denis finished 1st and 2nd respectively so they advanced to the 2nd round of the playoffs. Loreen played Scott Noonan in an exciting hill-hill match with Scott emerging the winner. On the other side, Kevin Hurd battled valiantly against Bobby, but in the end had to settle for a 5th/6th finish with Loreen.
The next round is what I like to call the “Battle of the Underdogs”! Paul Robinson faced off against Bobby Drowns, and came out a 4-1 winner much to his surprise. The other match was just as exciting. Dennis jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Scott. Scott then kicked into another gear and tied the match up 3-3. In the end Denis was able to keep his composure and emerged the victor!
In the final match, with the games all knotted up, Paul missed an 8-ball to allow Denis back to the table to run out the balls to victory. Congratulations to Denis Brazeau, champion of the inaugural Lucasi Summer Shootout, and to all who participated.
This tour will continue this fall, with Strokers in London, Ontario coming on board. It will be a strictly amateur tour for both men and women. First event will be held at Big Wig’s on November 19th. We will be posting the remaining details soon.
