Korea's Trio Makes the Cut at World 10-Ball

Aug 22, 2012

Manila, Philippines- Seventy percent of South Korea's contingent remains in the hunt for the World 10-Ball Championship. Korea sent four of their best, and 3 still remain. While Korea's team is not as large as some, the quality of their best players is irrefutable. Ga Young Kim, Eun Ji Park, and Yu Ram Cha all came through the round robin stage relatively unscathed.
Cha was the only of the three to go undefeated and clinch a top 8 seed, which rewards the players with a bye into the Sweet Sixteen. She defeated defending World Champion Kelly Fisher on the way in a 6-5 battle and ousted Filipina 13 year old sensation Cheska Centeno 6-2. Cha comes into the final stage at the #3 seed and will face Furberg of Sweden or Maki of Japan.
Eun Ji "Erica" Park dropped one match to #1 seed Fu of China, but then dominated her opponents from Taiwan, Iran, Venezuela, and Italy with no one passing 3 games. Park is the #12 seed and has a quarter finals finish here before and a Bronze at the US Open 9-Ball. Having many top 5 finishes in majors, she is a serious threat to win here.
Ga Young Kim is by far the most decorated player from Korea, men or women. With 2 world titles under her belt, she is salivating at the thought of winning her first World 10-Ball, which most considered to be the tougher and better of the two disciplines. Kim dropped her match to past champion Ouschan of Austria in a repeat of the 2010 finals, but Kim went on to dominate the rest of her group earning the #10 seed. Kim will face Kajitani of Japan today in a classic Korea vs Japan rivalry.
