Kluznik Konquers Summer Sizzle
Jul 2, 2015
This past weekend (June 27 & 28th) saw the inaugural Summer Sizzle held at the Shooters Snooker & Sports Club. The weather might have been cold and miserable outside but the action inside was hot and intense. A total of 55 players teed it up for this new tournament. Unfortunately there were some late cancellations and “no-shows” which prevented a full field tournament.
While the summer usually signals a slowdown in pool interest, there are several more tournaments planned for the summer months at Shooters to try to keep the interest strong throughout the summer. The always popular ‘404’ series and the newly minted Amateur 9 Ball Event were huge successes this past year and it appears that the new “one off” events like the Summer Sizzle and the incredibly popular ‘4-7’ Extravaganza augur well for continued successful events throughout the summer. All of these new events have a different format or eligibility requirement to appeal to the wide range of skill levels of the many pool players in the GTA and elsewhere in Southern Ontario.
As usual it was a long Day 1 for the tournament participants as the field was whittled down to the 12 players who would return for Sunday play. On the undefeated ‘A’ side of the draw, Jesse Piercey, Al Porter, Jeremy Nazareth and Justin Kluznik emerged unbeaten to be able to make another appearance on Day 2. The one-loss ‘B’ side of the draw concluded on Saturday with Peter Hetherington, Chris Capinpin, Adrian Fragoso, Ephraim Day, Jagdesh Raghoo, Isaac Ramos, Randall Truscott and Sumon Sarkar surviving to fight another day.
In the ‘A’ side final on Sunday, Justin Kluznik overcame Jesse Piercey with an 8-5 win sending Piercey to the ‘B’ side and Kluznik to the hot seat. Waiting on the ‘B’ side for Piercey was Isaac Ramos whose play got stronger as the tournament progressed. Ramos emerged with an 8-5 win over Piercey in the ‘B’ side final to qualify to face Kluznik for the tournament title. In a departure from the usual format of GTA tournaments, these “one off” tournaments are true double elimination events. Ramos continued his hot hand in his first match against Kluznik winning 8-4 but Kluznik found his groove in the 2nd match winning 8-1 to claim the championship title.
Congratulations to Justin Kluznik on his tournament win. This was Justin’s first win at Shooters this year and came against a very strong field of competitors.
Thank you to all the participants for a great weekend of pool. As noted previously, there are more innovative tournament formats on the horizon at Shooters for the balance of the summer months. Tournament qualifiers are also being run for each of these events. Check the Shooters Snookerclub Facebook page and www.thepoolscene for details and dates.
