On Cue Billiards - 1st June 2014
Hill Hill Pool took its first step onto Toronto's amateur pool scene this Sunday with great success. It saw top amateurs from far and wide join forces to compete in the inaugural Triple Elimination Scotch Doubles 8-Ball tournament. On Cue Billiards hosted and served up a great atmosphere with smooth tunes and delicious perogi which were more than equalled by the tasty shots and silky skills on the baize during the days match-ups.
Different to most organizations that cater for amateur pool, there is no handicap system in effect for any Hill Hill Pool league or tournament. League operator Rob Newsome believes this approach eliminates the 'pool politics' that are rife at other events: "Without handicaps, playing for the win and playing at your best is imperative in every match." Indeed, there were no qualms from the competitors at On Cue. As Hill Hill Pool puts it - 'Unleash Your True Potential.'

Unleash they did, especially the pairing of Bill Hong and Hermie Dy. Racing to three every match, they set the standard with a close fought 3-1 victory over David Yau and Randy Ventresca in the opening round. The momentum never shifted and after a dominant win over much favoured duo of Marko Moudrak and John Griffiths, they raced through the winners side only to match-up with David and Randy yet again. With a few more matches under their belt David and Randy were in good form looking to take the first race of the tournament away from Bill and Hermie. However, close to taking a 2-0 lead, uncharacteristic misses from the pair let in the opposition for the steal. Heads never dropped, but Hong and Dy proved too strong, wrapping up the victory and taking the title with a 3-2 win.

With leagues starting in the next few weeks, more events coming in the future and 2014 Canadian 10-Ball Champion Erik Hjorleifson on-board as the professional instructor, Hill Hill Pool looks set to be the place for top amateurs to compete against quality opposition.
