Chauncey and Rudder Win Poison Lone Star Tour Summer Event

Houston’s Jeff Chauncey was the big story at the Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour Summer 9-Ball Event, going undefeated in the 53-player amateur 9-ball division, to capture his first-ever, Poison Lone Star Tour event. Former tour champion, Chase Rudder, went unmatched in his 45-player open 9-ball division, and Louisiana’s own Derek Fontenot made an impressive showing, finishing runner-up in both divisions.
On June 11th-12th, 2016, Bogies Billiards and Sports Bar, along with tour title sponsor Poison by Predator Cues www.poisonbilliards.com, and sponsors Delta-13 Rack www.delta-13.com, Ozone Billiards www.ozonebilliards.com, and the APA of North Harris County www.facebook.com/apanorthharriscounty, facilitated another successful  Poison Lone Star Tour event, procuring a generous $1,500 added to the prize fund, with nearly a hundred players in attendance.
In the amateur 9-ball division, newcomer Jeff Chauncey came out firing with wins over Rudy Esteves, 7-1, Sonny Bosshamer, 7-3, and Bobby Perez, 7-3. Also on his way to the final four winners’ side, Masahiro “Hiro” Nakahara took down Trey Dyess, 7-3, Dustin Taylor, 7-1, and Anthony Gepayo, 7-2. Former tour champion, Kevin Nguyen, made quick work of Chuck Adams, Austin Barrett, 7-3, and J.C. Torres, 7-5, while Derek Fontenot drove through Horacio Cortez, Thomas Ybarra, 7-1, Ben Werry, 7-1, and Justin Espinosa, 7-5. On the one loss side, after losing his second match to Perez, 7-5, Chris Thompson won 5 consecutive matches, eliminating Thomas Rehm, 5-0, Daniel Wise, 5-2, Ben Werry, Mark Cardenas, 5-3, and Anthony Gepayo, 5-4. Also on the west side, Will Felder made his way with wins over Steve Williams, 5-0, Austin Barrett, 5-1, and Bobby Perez, 5-3. Bosshamer surged, defeating Jay Russell, 5-0, Philip Tieu, 5-1, before falling to J.C. Torres, 5-1. Taylor attempted a comeback with wins over Doug Schluter, 5-2, Adams, 5-2, and Yoko Joe, 5-3, but was stopped short by Espinosa, 5-3. The winners’ side was also taking shape, as Chauncey overwhelmed Nakahara, 7-3, and Nguyen defeated Fontenot, 7-5. Vying for his first win, Chauncey kept his eye on the prize, ousting Nguyen for the hot seat, 7-4. On the one loss side, Nakahara ended Espinosa’s run, while Fontenot went on to eliminate Felder, 5-1. Fontenot was far from finished, taking out Espinosa and Nguyen, and after 3 consecutive wins, faced off with an undefeated Chauncey in the finals. Fontenot showed no mercy the first set, dealing Chauncey a swift, first loss, 7-3. In the final match, players traded game for game, resulting in a hill-hill thriller. It seemed as if Fontenot had it all wrapped up until a killer scratch on the 8-ball cost him the game, and the set. In the open 9-ball division, Chase Rudder began his quest for the hot seat, defeating Dallas’ Joe Pelayo, 9-4, Bobby Perez, Steve Williams, 9-2, and J.C. Torres, 9-5. Fontenot made his way to the final four winners’ side, ousting Blaine Barcus, Philip Tieu, 9-8, and Jeff Chauncey, 9-7. Justin Espinosa claimed victories over Mark Wanner, Thomas Rhem, 9-8, Wa Ngo, and Sonny Bosshamer, 9-6, while his counterpart, Masahiro “Hiro” Nakahara, took down Dustin Taylor, Michael Wisdom, 9-4, Ernesto Bayaua, 9-5, and Yoko Joe, 9-7. On the one loss side, after losing his first match to Joe, Kevin Nguyen won 4 consecutive matches, besting Chris Rogers, 7-6, Perez, 7-6, Ngo, and Taylor, 7-6, before losing to Chauncey, 7-2. Following an earlier upset, Bayaua eliminated Chuck Adams, 7-0, Barcus, 7-1, but fell to Torres, 7-6. Chase Wheeler made a short, one loss side run, eliminating Rudy Esteves, 7-2, Williams, 7-0, but losing to Joe, 7-4. Philip Tieu made a bid for the final four on the one loss side securing wins over Anthony Gepayo, 7-1, and Bob Eaton, 7-2, until meeting his fate with Bosshamer, 7-2. Back on the east side, Rudder defeated Fontenot, 7-6, while Nakahara overcame Espinosa, 9-5. Rudder took control of the hot seat match, ending Nakahara’s winning streak, 9-7.  On the one loss side, Torres went on to eliminate Chauncey, 7-6, but was ousted by Espinosa, 7-1. Bosshamer sent Joe packing, 7-6, and in turn suffered a final blow by Fontenot, 7-6. Fontenot rolled over Espinosa, 7-2, and Nakahara, 7-2, to meet Rudder in the finals. With 3 consecutive wins, Fontenot was on a streak, and ready to take on an undefeated Rudder. As the final match commenced, both players were aggressive and unyielding, but in the end, Rudder pulled ahead, winning the set, 9-7. Congratulations to Chase Rudder on his first, tour victory of 2016.
