Apr 15, 2003
The WPA Western Canadian Open 9-ball Championships are underway at Great White Billiards and the Olympic Oval in Calgary, Alberta Canada. The field is full with 128 players competing for the $10,000 first prize.
The first round of sixteen matches is complete with the only real upset being Mike Massey's 11-4 victory over Ernesto Dominguez. Ralf Souquet is playing true to form, with an 11-0 thrashing of local software businessman Greg Cairns. Korean player Kim Ga Young showed no letdown after her second place finish over the weekend at the Northwest Womens Pool Association event, as she defeated Albert Gauthier 11-4.
Other players advancing in the first round included Jim Wych, Jeff Kennedy, Danny Hewitt, Ronnie Wiseman and teammates Edwin Montal & Nick Kruger. Montal and Kruger will face off against each other in the next round.
Complete brackets are online and we will have more results from this event later tonight. Diana Hoppe will arrive in Calgary on Wednesday and we will start posting photos from the event then.
