Boyes – I’ll Shut Strickland Up Again

Aug 19, 2014

England star will relish the opportunity to encounter Earl 'The Pearl'
Karl Boyes will relish the opportunity to keep Earl ‘The Pearl’ Strickland quiet should his England team come up against USA in the World Cup of Pool at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth, September 23-28.
Boyes partners Darren Appleton in the England ‘A’ team while Strickland will pair up with his 2013 Mosconi Cup team-mate Shane Van Boening.
Boyes defeated Strickland 6-4 in a singles match at last year’s Mosconi Cup to put Team Europe on the hill for what became a famous 11-2 victory in Las Vegas, and the Blackpool man would love an opportunity to come up against ‘The Pearl’ once again in Portsmouth.
“I am thrilled to be playing in this year’s World Cup of Pool, again with my partner Darren Appleton,” he said. “We are the best two UK players so it's only right we make the A team once again.

“The World Cup Of Pool, along with the Mosconi Cup, are the best two tournaments we have as pool players so everybody wants to do well in the event. We have a tough first round match against Spain but hopefully our experience in doubles play will stand us in good shape. The training has already started for this year’s World Cup Of Pool.
“On a personal note anytime I have the chance to shut Earl Strickland up you have to grasp it with both hands.
“Our main rivals are USA because of the Mosconi Cup. It's very intense when we do battle, and even in singles play throughout the season you can sense the tension.”
Now in its ninth year, the World Cup of Pool features 32 two-player teams from around the world battling it out for a $250,000 prize fund. The defending champions are the Philippines who will be among the favourites to claim a record-breaking fourth World Cup.
The field will be packed with some of the biggest names in world pool including Chris Melling and Daryl Peach (England B), as well as the likes of World Champions Niels Feijen, Mika Immonen, Thorsten Hohmann and Alex Pagulayan.
The event starts on Tuesday 23rd September and there are two sessions daily at 12 noon and 6.00pm during weekdays and then 1.00pm and 6.00pm at the weekend.
Tickets are priced at £5 for afternoon sessions, £10 for evening sessions with the all-session season ticket priced at £60. Commission is included although a transaction fee will apply.
