Big Hitters Cash Out Big!

Apr 6, 2017

The last of the Silver Jubilee qualifiers just past this weekend. 78 players came out to this week’s final event to qualify for the final in a few weeks. There was plenty of money up for grabs, about $5,700 in the prize pool and another $5,740 in the calcutta. There were many sharp shooters and favourites that came out. In the higher ranks you had: Ryann Malinao, Rob Hall, Rod Arsenault, and Jesse Piercy. In the mid-tier there was: Ken Stutz, Alan Ada, and Daniel Devos. Most of these players went in the calcutta with Rod Arsenault going as the first blind bid!
With 78 players and a top 16 payout this event was scheduled to be two days. The last 16 included: Stefane Godinho versus Kevin Murphy, Curtis Muller versus Glen Seesman, Jehlar Fernandez versus Rob Hall, and Ronald Giron versus Ken Stutz on the A side. The other 4 matches on the B side included: Aqeel Mohamad versus Waleed Hashem, Daniel Devos versus Kenny Chen, Steve Dutra versus Dave Daviau, and Ben Crawley versus Ryan Gammy.
Starting on the B side, Aqeel just came off a HUGE win against Rod Arsenault knocking him out of the tournament, but could not find that same gear against Waleed. In the end, Aqeel went out of the tournament losing 8-1. Daniel and Kenny had a much more contested match going game for game with each other, ultimately that favours Kenny as it is a 7-8 race leaving Kenny to advance winning 7-6. Next was the battle of the lower handicaps between Steve and Dave, it came down to hill-hill as Steve managed to just pull out the win and advance himself to the next round. After a very narrow escape from Kevin Oliveira, Ben Crawley looked as if he would never look back going pasts Ryan Gammy with ease.
The A side was status quo as the expected winners advanced from that round. Kevin Murphy beat Stefane 7-4. Glen Seesman beat Curtis 7-2. Rob Hall beat Jehlar 9-3 and finally Ken Stutz sends Ronald to the B side 8-4. The respective beaten players now have to go to the B side and try and come back. Waleed now had to beat the on form Stefane, but Stefane proved to be too strong this time winning in a very close 7-6 match. The match between Curtis and Kenny was even closer going right to hill-hill, Curtis was victorious this time and now plays Stefane. Curtis’ form continues against Stefane winning 6-4, Curtis is playing very strong today. On the bottom side of the B side, Steve Dutra is making his furthest run at Shooters given the size of the field and that continued against Jehlar, winning 5-3. Ronald’s run was put to an end as he goes two and out on day 2 against Ben Crawley. After his narrow loss versus Kevin, Ben seems very determined. This determination leads him through his next match against Steve D winning 9-2.
We are down to the last 12. Kevin M is playing Glen S and while Kevin had been playing strong all day Glen put up a tough battle, but eventually succumb to defeat allowing Kevin to advance to the A side final. Ken Stutz was the benefactor in his match against Rob going rack for rack with him until it was 7-7 leaving Ken and Kevin to play in the A side final. Ken has seemed almost machinelike as he disposes of Kevin 7-4 guaranteeing himself 1st or 2nd in this week’s final jubilee tournament. Rob has never lost his hunger to win and that was showing today, even after being sent to the B side in a hotly contested match against Ken, Rob bounces back beating Curtis 9-2 while Ben sends Glen S out of the tournament hill-hill. The two titans Ben and Rob have to battle it out to see who plays Kevin Murphy for 3rd place. Rob once again comes out on top beating Ben 9-6 and again against Kevin 9-5, Rob seems unstoppable at this point!
What a display from Rob Hall, being sent to the B side early on day 2 to come back to play Ken once again in the final. Rob had a mountain to climb to try and beat the person who sent him to the B side in the form of Ken Stutz, not once, but twice! The nerves were high but Rob was unfazed beating Ken the first set 9-5 and then once again to take home this weeks’ Shooters’ Silver Jubilee title! Congratulations to our top 16 for making it through such a tough field to finish in the money. Special congratulations to Rob Hall as he takes down another Shooters
Tournament showing he is one of the best amateur players at Shooters. Shooters would like to thank each and everyone for play/support in our four Silver Jubilee Events. See you all in the "$8,000 added" Silver Jubilee Finale scheduled April 22-23, 2017.
