Against All Odds: Nathan Clarke Takes Down Shooters’ 404 Event #5
Jan 19, 2016
On January 16 and 17, Shooters Snooker Club in Toronto hosted Event #5 of its 404 9-Ball Tour. The 404 Tour is host to many players of all skill levels, and this time out was no exception. With a strong field of 55 players SL 4 to SL 13 including John Morra, Erik Hjorleifson, and Mario Morra, this tournament was expected to be exciting and unpredictable. Despite the big tournament concurrently taking place in Ottawa, Shooters was pleased with the turnout of players. Players came out to compete for their share of the $2,620 prize pool and $2,090 Calcutta.
At the end of day 1, there were four players remaining on the A-Side who would come back Sunday to do battle. After Carlin Sanderson knocked Erik Hjorleifson to the B-Side, he would be lined up with John Morra on Sunday. The other A-Side match set for Sunday was Mario Morra vs Nathan Clarke.
Meanwhile, the 4 players left on the B-Side were:
Gene Chipongian vs Ryann Malinao
Adam Monture vs Marc Dumoulin
John M started out day 2 strong, defeating Carlin S 13-4, while Nathan C defeated Mario M in a very close hill-hill 5-10 match.
Ryan M went down 4-0 quickly to Carlin S on the B-Side before making a great comeback to win his match 7-5. Mario M defeated Adam M and was set to face Ryan M on the B-Side to determine who would face the loser of the hot-seat match.
In the hot-seat match, John M’s flawless shooting saw him win that match 13-1 over Nathan C. Nathan C was sent to the B-Side to face the winner of Ryan M vs Mario M. After another slow start, Ryann M found himself trailing Mario M 6-1. Ryann fought hard to take the match to the hill for both players, where Mario would eventually come out on top 11-6.
The B-Side finals was set, Mario M would have a chance at a rematch with Nathan C. Unfortunately for Mario, Nathan would not allow him to get his revenge, as Nathan earned his spot in the finals and a chance to rematch John M by defeating Mario 5-9.
The finals rematch between Nathan C and John M was an exciting one, with many people coming out to watch and support. A combination of great shooting by Nathan and a few mistakes by John led Nathan to take down the tournament in style, winning 5-8. After Nathan's recent improvements and tournament success, Shooters would like to congratulate Nathan for moving up to a well-deserved SL 6. It was a great tournament with many competitive matches and a good turnout of players.
