A Star is Born in Newmarket

Feb 21, 2011

The Diamond A Tour was born in October of 2010, and has just crowned their first set of champions this past weekend at Big Wig’s in Newmarket Onratio, the hottest poolroom in the area. The tour consisted of 4 qualifying events where participants had to compete in at least one event to qualify for the $3000 added finale this past weekend (Feb 19-20, 2011).
Out of a possible 100 newly signed members, 73 men, 15 women and 11 juniors, 55 braved whiteout conditions and made their way to Big Wigs in hopes of cashing in on some of the $3000 cash that was added to the event.
The women finished on Saturday, as only 5 showed up to vie for their piece of the $750 pie that was set aside for them. After a day of tough round robin action, we were left with 4. Hanna Kwon was defeated by Loreen Toutant and Lisa Mills lost to Penny Devoe. The final match brought together 2 old friends, Penny and Loreen. Like a woman on a mission, Loreen barely missed a step and earned her first place win with a 5-2 score. Thank you ladies for coming out and supporting our tour.

1st – Loreen Toutant ($350)
2nd – Penny Devoe ($250)
3rd - Lisa Mills ($150)
The 8 juniors provided the most excitement and entertainment throughout the weekend, keeping us on the edge of our seats with hill match after hill match. After 7 rounds of round robin play, a new star was born! The Diamond A Tour is pleased to announce that their inaugural champion is a 13 year old girl from Dorchester Ontario, Kayla Roloson! She defeated Stuart MacTaggart in a thrilling hill-hill match to become our first champion. Rounding out the top 4, was Sal Doxtattor in 3rd and Cody Godfrey in 4th. Our 2 finalists along with a beautiful McDernott cue, will receive hotel accommodation and travel expenses to the 2011 Canadian Billiard and Snooker Association Cuesport Championships
In the men’s division, 42 came to vie for their share of the $2200 total prize purse. 5 rounds of the round robin were completed on day 1, with the remaining 3 played on Sunday. In the end 16 players were drawn onto a single elimination draw sheet to start the narrowing down the field. The top 16 played a single elimination tournament to determine the top 8 finishers.

1st - Scott Noonan ($700),
2nd – Stephen Scobie ($500)
3rd – Bruce Ward ($350)
4th – David Letner ($250)
5th /6th – Aaron Sheahan, Ryan Machel
7th/8th – Joe Theriault, George Doyle.
22 participants also joined in a 2nd chance tournament Sunday afternoon, where Ken Defilippis took home 1st ($75) and Greg Flowers placed 2nd ($35).
