74 Years Young Herring Defeats Van Boening: Hohmann Takes #1 Seed on Day 3

Nanuet, NY- Earl Herring is not only the only African-American player in The World 14.1, but he also now has the distinction of being the oldest player to go undefeated in the round-robin in the history of billiards. He accomplished this by defeating the #1 player in the United States for the past decade, Shane Van Boening. Day 3 is in the books and for the 78th time, the round robin is completed. Players from Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, Australia, and the USA are vying for the title of World Straight Pool Champion and join the legends who have won the prestigous event since 1912.

4-time World 14.1 Champion Thorsten Hohmann of Germany also went undefeated and takes the #1 pole position once again going into the next stage, double elimination 150 point games. Hohmann only allowed 87 balls against him in a total of 5 matches! That's not even enough to lose a match in the entire round robin. Hohmann eyes a 5th World 14.1 title that will have him surpass Luther Lassiter

USA hopeful and 2012 World 14.1 winner John Schmidt took the #2 seed also undefeated with only 98 balls allowed in 5 matches. NYC's Tony Robles was undefeated taking the #3 seed, Warren Kiamco of the Philippines took the 4th seed undefeated, and Herring took the 5th seed.

"God makes miracles happen everyday", said Herring who is a pastor of a local church in NY. Herring also defeated Thorsten Hohmann in the round robin stage in 2013.

"He surprised me. I didn't know who he was. I was up 98-70 and I played a safe. Then I never shot again" said Van Boening the 2014 Runner-Up in the World 14.1.

Herring faces European top player Petri Makkonen of Finland where he is ranked #1 at 1:30pm today on the Valley-Dynamo.com TV table. Watch on Worldstraightpool.com

The World 14.1 is hosted by The Spot Billiards Cafe August 13-19th, 2018. The Spot will have the honor of hosting the longest running and oldest tradition in billiards, the World Tournament of 14.1.
