World Juniors 9-ball Championship 2017 U17
68 athletes from 22 countries have come to Russia’s capital to determine this year’s Worlds 9-Ball champions in three divisions – girls, juniors under 19 and pupils under 17. Top youth athletes from five continents will decide who is going to be the world champion this year.
The team Europe consist of 11 players (3 girls, 4 pupils and 4 juniors) who have qualified through European championships and additional six players who were able to get their spot in world championships by qualifying through European qualification event which was held few days before the main event here in Moscow.
The start of the tournament was not an easy walk for some European players. Current European 9-ball champion Jan van Lierop (Netherlands) had a real thriller against Taiki Tanaka (Japan). In the start of the match, Jan took the first two points, but the Janapnese player showed his best and took the initiative. Being the chaser most of the match, Jan needed his best skills to change the outcome of the match. His almost perfect play on the hill-hill allowed him to move into the second round.
Another European player Patrick Hofmann (Germany) had also a very close victory against Luciano Ayala from Argentina. With only 9:7 victory Patrick moves to the winners’ qualification where he will play his teammate Fedor Gorts from Russia. This match seems to be the key-happening of Day 2 since both boys are true pretendants for the world title.
