Mario Morra: Shooters’ Inaugural 15-Ball Champion

Shooters Snooker Club in Toronto hosted their inaugural 15-Ball tournament on Boxing Day, December 26, 2015. The tournament started in the afternoon at 2 pm to accommodate those who were shopping in the morning, or attending to other Holiday functions. The organizers set the event for one-day completion, and so the field was capped at 32 players. The event was open to all players, and so the field consisted of amateurs and professionals of all skill levels. There was clearly a strong interest in this new tournament style. Shooters waived all green fees and players raced straight to 5 games per match in order to compete for a prize pool of $1260 and a Calcutta of just over $600.
After several hours of play, the A-Side was down to 4 players:
Oscar Zapata vs Mario Morra
and
Rob Hall vs John Morra
The B-Side saw Waleed Mukhtar faceoff against Rob Hall and Arjun Devarajan faceoff against Oscar Z, while the A-Side ended off with the battle of the Morra’s.
Rob H defeated Waleed M in a close hill-hill match, and Oscar Z cruised to the B-Side Semi-finals, where a determined Rob Hall would eventually knock him out. Mario Morra got the best of John, and waited in the hot seat to face the winner of Rob H vs John M. Rob Hall finished in third place after coming up short against John M in the B-Side Finals 5-1.
Mario Morra defeated John Morra in the finals to claim the Shooters’ Inaugural 15-Ball Championship. Mario demonstrated phenominal shooting all day, including a hill-hill victory over Erik Hjorleifson earlier in the day. Congratulations to Mario!

This new tournament format had a very positive reception among the players and Shooters will be repeating this event in the future with slight modifications to the handicapping structure. Thank you to everyone who participated and came out to support and to the organizers and staff for a job well done to complete the tournament in one day.
Shooters’ would like to remind everyone about their next 2 events:
Jan 2/3: Amateur 9-Ball Tour (Handicap 4-9)
Jan 9: Seven and Under 9-Ball Event (Straight Race to 7)
