What a weekend of great pool action! On January 9 and 10, 2016, Shooters Snooker Club in Toronto held its first ever 7 and under straight race event. Players up to SL7 competed in a straight race to 7 on the A and B-Side. This unique tournament required that players also call the 9-ball. With 85 players attempting to register, Shooters capped the field at 72 in order to prevent long wait times in between matches.
This inaugural tournament hosted by Shooters had players of all skill levels competing for their share of a $3,140 prize pool and $2,410 Calcutta.
At the end of the first day, the field of 72 dwindled down to 12 strong players. The A-Side had:
Tom Hogan vs Jun Briones
Alfonso Haggerty vs Scott MacDonald
Jackson Revell vs Waleed Mukhtar
Nick Blancher vs Greg Johnson
The 4 players left on the B-Side were Rob Johnson, Jeff Dick, Jeremy Nazareth, and Jeremy Brown, who fought hard to win 5 consecutive matches after losing his opening match.
The A-Side Finals match would ultimately be between Scott MacDonald and Nick Blancher. Scott M came out on top 7-5 to earn his spot in the hot seat. Nick was sent to the B-Side to face Jun B in order to try and earn a rematch against Scott M. Nick B did just that, and he would try to get some revenge against Scott M. As fate would have it, Scott M defeated Nick B 7-5 once again to become champion. Congratulations Scott M, and credit goes out to the SL5s and SL6s that made a good run in the tournament.
Players showed a great interest in this tournament format, and because of the outstanding reception, Shooters is pleased to announce that there will be another tournament with the same format coming within the next few months. Thank you to all the players and those who came out to support.
